6 ounces sweet or hot Italian-style turkey sausage, cut into 1/2-inch thick slices

Americans Still ZOMG! Fat… But We’re Living Longer Than Ever

That’s right, we haven’t lost weight as a nation, but our life expectancy has just reached a new high. According to the Associated Press, the life expectancy of a child born in the US in 2009 is seventy-eight years, two months. That’s up from the kid of 2008 who could expect to live just seventy-eight years, zero months. But hey, at least that’s up from the seventy-seven years, eleven months statistic that was caused by a computer glitch, apparently.

Let’s see… we haven’t gotten thinner in the past year. So what has changed? Well, deaths are down in ten of the fifteen leading causes, including: heart disease, stroke, cancer, Alzheimer’s, homicide, accidents, and influenza and pneumonia.

Unfortunately, suicide made the top ten causes of death list for the first time since 1999. This, however, is not due to a major upswing in suicides, but rather the fact that blood infection deaths dropped by some two per cent.

Of course the news isn’t equal for everyone. Women still live longer than men, whites longer than blacks, and let’s face it: money makes a big difference.

What isn’t making a big difference? Despite years of hand-wringing, weight doesn’t seem to be killing us off at record numbers. Even assertions like the ones made here aren’t killing us off. Not even this one:

People who are fat do not like to have an active social life, and keep themselves restricted inside their home because of the fear of being embarrassed with their obesity. Continue

Michelle Obama Reveals Her Fashion Motto

First Lady Michelle Obama may be a major fashion plate, but she’s not choosing her daily looks based on labels — it’s all about practicality.

Speaking to reporters Monday during a roundtable at the White House for her Let’s Move! campaign, Obama revealed her personal style motto. “I have to wear what I love,” she said. “I have to feel good in it. My day-to-day wardrobe choices are very practical. I’m like, ‘What’s the temperature?’ ‘Am I going to be sitting in the grass?’ ‘Will I be playing with kids?’ ‘Can I sit on the floor?’”  http://stylenews.peoplestylewatch.com/2011/10/18/michelle-obama-fashion-and-designers/

WPGN BOOK CORNER

Product Description

A story of a young black boy growing up in the small southern town of Baton Rouge, LA, in the late 1950s, including the adventures in the segregated Deep South with one singular thought: How do I get out of here? (Not due to any racism; my parents shielded me from that madness, thank God.) I wanted to escape the ultimate cardinal sin—BOREDOM. Baton Rouge was and is a wonderful place to be raised; however, by the time I was old enough to pee, I knew I had to get out. This is a story of dreams, raw ambition, and nerve. I wanted what I saw on TV. I wanted that exotic world of glamour, sophistication, power, and wealth. I could taste it. I could smell it. I had no idea what it was or why I even wanted it, but I felt compelled to have it and I set out to get it by any means necessary. At the age of 12 when I visited New York for 2 weeks (with my parents and sister), I was hooked. My story is how at 19, I left the small town for the big city—my new home—New York. How I moved on the same street as one of my idols, Jackie Kennedy. It is a story of how I became the host of the longest running weekly cable TV jazz talk show—The JaRon Eames Show, interviewing, preserving, and archiving many of the legends of jazz: Nancy Wilson, Oscar Peterson, Anita Oday, George Wein, Clark Terry, Margaret Whiting, Dr. Billy Taylor, the last known interview with the legendary singer Joe Williams, and even comic legend George Carlin. It is a story of how I met with, laughed with, wined/dinned, and sexed the rich and famous; how I traveled the world at an early age, living the life of a jetsetter until years, drugs and alcohol took control of my mind and I ended up in a straightjacket in the mental ward. It is a horror story, yet so full of laughter, tears, love, hope and redemption.

WHAT IS AROMATHERAPY?

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the practice of using volatile plant oils, including essential oils, for psychological and physical well-being.

Essential oils, the pure essence of a plant, have been found to provide both psychological and physical benefits when used correctly and safely. The Essential Oil Profiles area details over 90 essential oils. Absolutes, CO2s and Hydrosols are also commonly utilized in aromatherapy. Although essential oils, CO2 extracts and absolutes are distilled by different methods, the term essential oil is sometimes used as a blanket term to include all natural, aromatic, volatile, plant oils including CO2s and absolutes.

In addition to essential oils, aromatherapy encourages the use of other complementary natural ingredients including cold pressed vegetable oils, jojoba (a liquid wax), hydrosols, herbs, milk powders, sea salts, sugars (an exfoliant), clays and muds.

Products that include synthetic ingredients are frowned upon in holistic aromatherapy. It is important to note that…

5 Organic Gardening Tips for White House Gardeners (and You!)

RODALE NEWS, EMMAUS, PA—First Lady Michelle Obama put shovel to soil on the south lawn of the White House Friday, breaking ground for an organic garden, the first White House vegetable garden since 1943. Back then, Eleanor Roosevelt planted a victory garden during World War II, a time when the country was also facing economic woes and uncertainty. “It made sense before, and it makes sense again as we try to live within our own means and those of the planet,” says Roger Doiron, founder of the nonprofit Kitchen Gardeners International, and the leader of “Eat the View,” a petition campaign that pushed for a White House garden.

THE DETAILS: The First Lady told The New York Times that the 1,100-square-foot White House Kitchen Garden will not only provide fruits and veggies for her family and White House guests, but will be used as an educational tool to show children the importance of local, organic food production. And yes, President Barack Obama will have to help weed.

WHAT IT MEANS: To organic gardeners and sustainable-agriculture advocates, what happened on the White House lawn Friday was as satisfying as the juiciest homegrown tomato—and more ripe with hope than a mouthwatering garden watermelon. Finally, a First Family that gets the connection between healthy living and a healthy planet! But you don’t have to be living in DC to get in on the fun. Start your own presidential garden this spring.

Here are 5 tips from …

PRESS RELEASE: During National Nutrition Month 2011 and Beyond, American Dietetic Association Encourages Everyone to Eat Right with Color

Month-long campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits

Media Contacts: Ryan O'Malley, Allison MacMunn

media@eatright.org

CHICAGO – As trends continue to indicate Americans are interested in improving their diets and leading more healthful lifestyles, the American Dietetic Association reminds everyone that an easy way to focus on eating better is to "Eat Right with Color," which is this year's theme of National Nutrition Month®. Each March, ADA focuses attention on returning to the basics of healthy eating. This year's National Nutrition Month theme encourages consumers to remember to include a colorful variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and dairy on their plates every day.

"The American Dietetic Association is committed to improving the nation's health, and one of the ways we do this is by providing science-based nutrition information to consumers in a way that’s easy to understand and apply to their everyday lives," said registered dietitian and ADA President Judith C. Rodriguez. "National Nutrition Month offers a great opportunity to focus people's attention on a universal theme that cuts through the clutter of information and gets back to the principles of a healthful diet."

Initiated in 1973 as a week-long event, "National Nutrition Week" became a month-long observance in 1980 in response to growing public interest in nutrition. Additionally, to commemorate the dedication of RDs as advocates for advancing the nutritional status of Americans and people around the world, the second Wednesday of March has been designated "Registered Dietitian Day." This year marks the fourth annual Registered Dietitian Day.

The recently released 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend an increased focus on a plant-based diet. This combined with including lean meats, fish and poultry, and low-fat milk and dairy products creates a rainbow of colors on the plate that serve as the foundation for a healthful eating plan.

"The Dietary Guidelines provide a great base for directing the eating patterns of Americans. The expertise of registered dietitians can translate the Guidelines into easy, actionable and personal information that can be used to develop a healthful eating plan that is right for the individual," Rodriguez said. "ADA encourages all Americans to take time during National Nutrition Month to look at their eating patterns and begin to make the small improvements that, over time, add up to significant health benefits."

As part of this public education campaign, ADA's National Nutrition Month website includes a variety of helpful tips, fun games, promotional tools and nutrition education resources, all designed to spread the message of good nutrition around the "Eat Right with Color" theme.

The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. We can think of the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit.

What is commonly referred to as "yoga" can be more accurately described by the Sanskrit word asana, which refers to the practice of physical postures or poses.

Asana is only one of the eight "limbs" of yoga, the majority of which are more concerned with mental and spiritual well being than physical activity. In the West, however, the words asana and yoga are often used interchangeably.

"The news isn't that fruits and vegetables are good for you, it's that they are so good for you, they can save your life." David Bjerklie, TIME Magazine, Oct. 2003. You are what you eat, so eat well.

A stupendous insight of civilizations past has now been confirmed by today's investigative, nutritional sciences. They have shown that what was once called "The Doctrine of Signatures" was astoundingly correct. It now contends that every whole food has a pattern that resembles a body organ or physiological function and that this pattern acts as a signal or sign as to the benefit the food provides the eater. Here is just a short list of examples of Whole Food Signatures. A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye...and science shows that carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart is red and has four chambers. All of the research shows tomatoes are indeed pure heart and blood food.Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows that grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds are on the nut just like the neo-cortex. We now know that walnuts help develop over 3 dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet the body pulls it from the bones, making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.Eggplant, Avocadoes and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs. Today's research shows that when a woman eats 1 avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this?…Continue

Spirituality Plays Important Role in Breast Cancer Information Processing for African-American Women, Study Finds

By Katherine KostiukMU News BureauColumbia, Mo. (Jan. 31, 2007) -- The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 178,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die as a result of breast cancer in 2007. One way to battle these numbers is through increased information sharing and use of early detection methods. A new study from the Missouri School of Journalism has found that spirituality might play an important role in achieving this, particularly for African-American women."Spirituality has been found to be an important cultural factor for African-American women thinking about their health, so we evaluated its impact on breast cancer information processing," said Glenn Leshner, associate professor of radio-television journalism. "We found that spirituality positively affected African-American women's willingness to talk about breast cancer, pay attention to information about breast cancer and engage in preventative measures."Leshner worked with Cynthia Frisby, associate professor of strategic communication; I-Huei Cheng, MA '02, PhD '05, assistant professor at the University of Alabama; Yoonhyeung Choi, PhD '05, assistant professor at Michigan State University, and Hyun Joo Song, PhD '05. The researchers studied the effects of spiritual locus of control - the belief that God has control over health - by conducting surveys in 11 U.S. cities. Then they analyzed the 446 completed surveys (240 from Caucasian women, 206 from African-American women). Results showed that for African-American women, spirituality had a positive effect on talking about cancer and paying attention to breast cancer messages in the media. For Caucasian women, spiritual locus of control played no role in paying attention to breast cancer information."By embracing cultural and ethnic factors, this study helps develop a more holistic health message processing model so that we can better understand processes associated with health message rejection and…Continue

Recognizing Violence Against Women: 16 Days for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Recognizing Violence Against Women: 16 Days for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25 - December 10) US State DepartmentThe dates, November 25, International Day Against Violence Against Women and December 10, International Human Rights Day, were chosen in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a violation of human rights.Secretary Rice recently urged embassies to recognize the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and to participate in the 16 days of activism by engaging host country governments, civil society and media in the prevention of violence against women. The Office of the Senior Coordinator for International Women's Issues (G/IWI) is working with embassies around the world to offer support, guidance, and appropriate engagement on strategies to raise awareness about gender based violence. For example, in Budapest, Hungary, the Office of International Women's Issues is supporting activities to raise awareness about violence against women during the 16 days of activism led by Ambassador April Foley. Andrea Bottner, Director of the Office of International Women's Issues, will deliver remarks and facilitate a roundtable discussion on Domestic Violence in Budapest, Hungary on Tuesday, November 27th, followed by a visit to a domestic violence shelter later in the week. She will also address NGO leaders, law enforcement, students and others at a domestic violence conference hosted by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor. While there, she will also address a conference of the International Centre for Democratic Transition (ICDT) on Women's Role in Social Transformation. Additionally, Ms. Bottner will participate in a Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty interview to discuss the causes and social costs of domestic violence, and the measures to combat it.Violence against women (VAW) exists in epidemic proportions, whether it occurs in the form of domestic…Continue
